Abstract

By utilising the concepts of synchronicity and paradigm shift, this paper aims to offer insights on the similarities and contrasts between the Italian and English schools of Urban Morphology. The research, developed by the landscape laboratory at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) Brazil, examines and reveals the possible synchronicity between concepts, which were the result of the personal crises suffered by M.R.G. Conzen and Saverio Muratori and the subsequent paradigm shift against modernity to which the two founding fathers of Urban Morphology contributed. This rupture, it is argued, was a reaction to the historical milieu, in which the two scholars found themselves. The period in question commenced before the 2nd World War and culminated in the new approaches and practices emerging in urban planning at the beginning of the 1960s. Thus, the determinants and motivations of the two researchers, which led to the emergence of urban morphology, will be highlighted so as to enhance and consolidate understanding for future generations of scholars working within this field of knowledge.
