Abstract
The study presented in this paper is rooted in the Space Syntax research field, particularly as concerns the simulation of change in urban configuration. It aims to identify effects of road interventions in the urban fabric by investigating possible socio-spatial impacts that the construction of a new bridge in Natal, Brazil, might cause. The research problem focuses on questioning who would benefit the most with this intervention in terms of accessibility gain. The discussed new bridge and its links were embedded in the representation (segment maps) of Natal’s present space network. Origin-destination (NAIN) and through-movement (NACH) accessibility values pertaining to the situations without and with the bridge, were compared and then collated to census data about income distribution in Natal. Preliminary results point to the redistribution of high integration vectors from the periphery of Natal’s northern region towards its geometric centre (neighbourhood of Potengi), and to accessibility gain in areas of older occupation (Cidade Alta and Alecrim), potentially extending towards the site defined as the town’s historic centre (Cidade Alta and Ribeira), while at the same time strengthening the city’s current integration core, in the affluent eastern/southern regions. As shown in previous studies, some of which mentioned in this article, the effects of accessibility gain in old Brazilian centralities have led to radical changes of the built environment, rarely consistent with the notion of preservation of cultural assets.
